Canine Good Citizen Program

Elizabeth Givens Dog Training & Behavior offers preparation and testing for the AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program and the advanced CGC, Community Canine. The CGC program was developed to encourage responsible pet ownership and to test good behavior in public. Each of the two levels of the CGC requires that owners and their dogs take a multi-item test, with an evaluator. Participants must satisfactorily complete all test items in order to pass.
You can learn more about the CGC program on the AKC's website by going here.
Our CGC and Community Canine courses include a practice test, during which you and your instructor identify what you and your dog need to work on. All clients take at least two sessions (the practice test and the final test) as well as as many private sessions as needed, in between. The final session, during which you take the final test, is free, except for a $25 testing fee, for each test.

Test Items

AKC Canine Good Citizen

Individual 45-Minute Sessions. $75/session

Includes initial practice test; training sessions. Final scored practice test is $25.

The Canine Good Citizen program is the American Kennel Club's basic test for a dog's good behavior in public. The test requires that dogs and their owners satisfactorily complete all ten test items in order to pass.

This course will start with a practice test, where you and your instructor will determine which test items need the most work. In the sessions that follow, you will work on these test items, preparing to take the CGC test at the end of the course.

The Canine Good Citizen program recently added an Advanced CGC test, called Community Canine. Whereas CGC tests are almost always conducted in a ring, the Community Canine test is done in real situations, within the community.

As with our CGC Course, we offer an initial practice test, followed by individual training sessions that focus on the test items you need to pass the Community Canine test. The final scored test is administered at the end of the training sessions and is included in the cost of the course.
